just by looking Question: is there a way at all for people to get an idea if say, a pair of “diamond” ear rings are really diamond ear rings?

You have to understand that a Manufacturing Jewelry Company doesn’t know what gemstones are going to be set in a piece of Jewelry.
The Maker might want to have a range like, Sapphire, Ruby or Emerald - so they cannot stamp the Gold, Silver or Platinum metal to show it is Diamond - because stones may be swapped or lost or changed.
Your local friendly jeweler has a ‘Diamond Probe’ tool and should (for No fee) be able to tell you instantly if the gems are really diamond or not.
Just be nice to them and they will see you as a new potential client.
If they won’t do this for you FIND ANOTHER ONE!
